This has been an exploration. What can dance-on-film allow the viewer to see? Images that cannot be seen on stage. I wanted to play with video footage from the “outside eye” mixed with the “dancers’ eye” – a camera strapped on each dancer’s body. What to do? Juxtapose? Overlay? Switch between? This film shows some of the possibilities designed with our talented film editor, Nathan Gebhard.
In choosing where to film, I went back to my beloved Mississippi River. We followed the current, starting upriver at the Coon Rapids Dam, flowing past the Stone Arch Bridge, to Raspberry Island in St. Paul, and ending downriver at Hastings Riverwalk.
We experimented with the camera angles and which body parts to place the cameras on. The three dancers – Torre Erdahl, Kaori Kenmotsu, Lori Mercil – worked beautifully together, contributing to the final choreography, in which Laban’s Space Harmony is embedded.
